If you’re thinking of studying or building your career in the UK, there are some important visa updates you should know about. The UK Home Office has announced updates to the Immigration Rules, introducing important changes to both the Student and Graduate visa routes.
These changes could influence how much money you need to show, and how long you can stay in the UK after you graduate. Here’s a clear breakdown of what’s changing and what you can do to prepare.
1. Increased financial requirements for Student Visas (From 11 November 2025)
From 11 November 2025, the UK Government will raise the financial evidence required for Student visa applications.
- The monthly living cost requirement outside London will rise from £1,136 to £1,171.
- You’ll now need to show at least £10,539 to cover living costs for nine months, plus your first year’s tuition fees.
- These funds must be held in your account for at least 28 consecutive days before applying.
Tip: Start preparing your finances early and make sure your documentation clearly meets UKVI’s 28-day rule.
2. Graduate Visa duration reduced (From 1 January 2027)
The Graduate visa; the route that lets you stay in the UK and work after finishing your degree, is also being shortened.
- Undergraduate and taught postgraduate graduates will see their post-study stay reduced from 2 years to 18 months. If you apply before 1 January 2027, you’ll still get the full 2-year period.
- PhD and doctoral graduates will continue to receive 3 years.
3. Why the UK is making these changes
The adjustments are part of the UK Government’s wider effort to manage migration and ensure students can fully support themselves financially while studying.
While the new requirements may feel like an extra hurdle, they also reflect the UK’s continued commitment to maintaining a strong, high-quality international education system.
4. What this means for you
Now’s the time to be proactive:
- Consider starting in January 2026 if you’re planning to study a one-year postgraduate course. This timing may allow you to apply for a two-year Graduate visa before the 1 January 2027 deadline, since your university must first confirm that you have completed your course before you apply.
- Prepare your finances and documents carefully.
- Plan your next steps well ahead of your graduation date.
