Thinking about studying in the UK and wondering if your family can join? This article explains the latest UK Student visa rules on who qualifies as a dependant and what to know.

Who Qualifies as a Dependant Under the UK Student Visa? New Rules Explained

Planning to study in the UK? You may be wondering if your partner or children can join you. The UK Student visa rules allow certain students to bring dependants, but only if specific conditions are met. Knowing the rules in advance helps you prepare documents and finances, ensuring a smooth process.

1. Who counts as a dependant?

Dependants include:

  • Partner: spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner (with evidence of a genuine, long-term relationship).
  • Child: under 18, not married or in a civil partnership and living with you (unless living away from home in full-time education).

Eligibility depends on your course:

  • Government-sponsored students on courses longer than 6 months.
  • Full-time postgraduate students on courses 9 months or longer. From January 2024, this typically includes PhDs or research-based higher degrees only.
Tip: Keep proof of relationships, birth certificates, and address evidence ready — it makes your application faster and easier.

2. Financial requirements & duration

For dependants, you must show sufficient funds:

  • Courses in London: £845 per month per dependant (for up to 9 months).
  • Courses outside London: £680 per month per dependant (for up to 9 months).

If you’re applying together with your partner or child, you’ll need to show that you have enough money to cover your course fees, support yourself, and provide additional funds for each family member.

You must keep the required amount of money in your (or your dependant’s) account for a full 28 days in a row, without it dropping below the minimum balance. The last day of that 28-day period must be within 31 days before you submit your visa application, meaning your financial evidence must be recent.

Tip: Prepare finances early to avoid last-minute stress.

Applying and planning ahead

Dependants can apply with you or separately. They’ll need to provide identity (biometric checks or ID app) and supporting documents.

Tip: Apply early, check eligibility, and plan finances carefully — preparation makes bringing your family with you less stressful.

Final word

Bringing dependants with you on a UK Student visa can be straightforward if you understand the rules and plan ahead. With the right preparation, your loved ones can join you, but only if your course is eligible, helping you make the most of your UK study experience.
